I had one of the most productive weeks of my life during a period I can barely remember emotionally.
I'm not proud of that. I'm not ashamed of it either. It just happened. Something went quiet inside — not in a peaceful way, more like a signal dropping — and in the absence of all that noise I just... worked. Answered everything. Made decisions. Moved things forward. Completely dissociated and completely on top of it.
People talk about numbness like it's a failure state. Like you're supposed to feel everything all the time and if you don't, something's wrong with you. But I've come to think of it differently. Sometimes the system goes into a kind of safe mode. Not broken — just running on the essentials. Keeping the lights on while something processes in the background that you're not ready to look at yet.
You still get dressed in safe mode. You still show up. You just do it without the usual internal commentary. No "does this feel right." No mood to dress for. You reach for the thing that requires the least from you and somehow that ends up being the most honest choice you've made all week.
Dark. Simple. A graphic that says something so you don't have to. You put it on and you go out and you do the day and nobody knows that you're running at about thirty percent capacity because thirty percent of you is apparently enough to fool everyone.
I don't recommend staying there. But I understand it. And I think there's something worth saying about the version of yourself that keeps going even when the feeling part has temporarily clocked out.
That person deserves a good outfit too.
