I haven't produced anything in four days.
If you looked at my desk you'd think nothing was happening. There are three open tabs I haven't read. A notebook with two words in it. A voice memo I recorded at 2am that I haven't listened back to because I'm not ready to hear what I said.
Something is happening. I just can't show it to you yet.
This is the part of creativity nobody talks about because it doesn't make a good story. The output is the story. The finished thing, the launched thing, the thing you can point to. But before that there's this — a kind of internal weather that looks like nothing from the outside and feels like everything from the inside.
I get restless in it. I rearrange things. I go for walks that don't go anywhere. I pick up books and put them down after three pages not because they're bad but because my brain is already somewhere else and I can't tell it to wait.
I got dressed this morning like I was going somewhere important. Not because I was — I was going to sit at the same desk and stare at the same wall. But something about putting on the right thing makes the inside feel less chaotic. Like a signal to myself: we're working, even if it doesn't look like it.
The creative state isn't the one where you're making. It's the one where you're becoming whatever makes the thing.
That part is invisible. But it's the whole job.
